TSI vs. TSIA2: What Changed?
The original TSI Assessment was the Texas college placement test before January 2021. The original TSI math section used four content categories:
- Elementary Algebra and Functions
- Intermediate Algebra and Functions
- Geometry and Measurement
- Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability
The TSIA2, which replaced it in 2021, uses updated domain labels but covers largely the same mathematical content:
- Quantitative Reasoning
- Algebraic Reasoning
- Geometric and Spatial Reasoning
- Probabilistic and Statistical Reasoning
The TSIA2 also introduced a Diagnostic section for students who do not score at the college-ready level on the initial test, which provides more information about which skills need strengthening. The Four TSIA2 Math Domains in Detail
1. Quantitative Reasoning
This domain covers the foundational number skills that support all the other domains. You cannot score well in Algebraic Reasoning without fluency in Quantitative Reasoning. Topics:

- Fractions: Adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing fractions and mixed numbers; simplifying

2. Algebraic Reasoning
This is the largest and most impactful domain. Strong performance here is the single biggest driver of a high TSIA2 math score. Topics:
- Linear equations: One-variable equations, equations with variables on both sides, literal equations
- Linear inequalities: Solving and graphing; multi-step inequalities; compound inequalities
- Systems of equations: Graphing, substitution, elimination; identifying no-solution and infinite-solution cases
- Polynomial operations: Adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials; applying exponent rules
- Factoring: GCF, difference of squares, factoring trinomials (a = 1 and a ≠ 1)
- Quadratic equations: Solving by factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula
- Rational expressions: Simplifying, multiplying, and dividing rational expressions
- Functions: Function notation, evaluating functions, identifying domain and range
Strategy: Spend at least half your total prep time here. Start with linear equations and work forward. The quadratic formula and rational expressions are the topics students most often run out of time to review.
3. Geometric and Spatial Reasoning
This domain is frequently underprepared. Many students focus exclusively on algebra and are surprised by the number of geometry questions. Topics:
- Area and perimeter of triangles, rectangles, circles, and other polygons
- Surface area and volume of prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres
- Coordinate geometry: distance formula, midpoint formula, slope of a line
- Angle relationships: complementary, supplementary, vertical angles, angles formed by parallel lines
- Pythagorean Theorem and its converse
- Similar and congruent figures: scale factor, proportional side lengths
Strategy: Create a formula reference sheet and memorize it before test day. Most geometry questions are straightforward once you know the formula — the challenge is knowing which formula applies. Practice identifying the correct formula from the question, not just computing once you have it.
4. Probabilistic and Statistical Reasoning
This domain tests your ability to work with data and reason about chance. Topics:
- Measures of center: mean, median, mode; when each is most appropriate
- Measures of spread: range, mean absolute deviation, standard deviation (conceptual only)
- Data displays: bar graphs, histograms, box plots, scatter plots, frequency tables; reading and interpreting

Strategy: Data interpretation questions are often the fastest to answer on the test — if you practice reading graphs and tables quickly. Dedicate one study session to each major graph type (box plot, scatter plot, histogram) so you can extract information efficiently.
How TSIA2 Scoring Works
The TSIA2 math section is computer-adaptive. The test software adjusts question difficulty based on how you answer each question. There is no set number of questions — the algorithm collects responses until it can produce a reliable score.
Scores are reported on a scale of 310 to 390. Each Texas institution sets its own college-ready cutoff. Many institutions use a score in the range of 350 as the college-ready threshold, but some set it higher and some lower. A score below the cutoff triggers placement into a developmental or co-requisite support course.
If your initial score falls below college-ready, you will likely complete a Diagnostic section. The Diagnostic is not a second full test — it provides the institution with additional information about which skills need the most work and may take 20–30 minutes to complete.
Sample Practice Question: One Per Domain
Quantitative Reasoning: A jacket costs $64. What is the price after a 12.5% discount?
Solution: Discount = 0.125 × 64 = $8. Sale price = $64 − $8 = $56.
Algebraic Reasoning: Factor completely: 3x² − 12x
Solution: GCF = 3x. 3x(x − 4).
Geometric and Spatial Reasoning: Find the area of a circle with radius 7. (Use π ≈ 3.14)
Solution: A = πr² = 3.14 × 49 = 153.86 square units.
Probabilistic and Statistical Reasoning: A data set is 5, 8, 12, 15, 20. What is the mean? What is the range?
Solution: Mean = 60/5 = 12. Range = 20 − 5 = 15.
TSI Math Prep Plan by Timeline
4 Weeks or More
Week 1: Quantitative Reasoning — fractions, percents, ratios, proportions. Daily 30-minute sessions, 15–20 problems.
Week 2: Algebraic Reasoning Part 1 — linear equations, inequalities, systems.
Week 3: Algebraic Reasoning Part 2 — polynomials, factoring, quadratics, functions.
Week 4: Geometry and Statistics — review formulas, data interpretation, mixed practice test.
2 Weeks
Focus on Algebraic Reasoning (1 week) and Quantitative Reasoning (half a week). Use the remaining time for a full practice test and error review. Touch the geometry formulas at minimum.
1 Week
Prioritize the topics where your diagnostic test showed the most missed questions. Take one full timed practice test at the midpoint and one the day before the exam. Rest the night before — fatigue on an adaptive test costs more than one missed topic.
