A good ASVAB math study plan has to do two jobs at once: rebuild core arithmetic fluency and prepare you for the way ASVAB questions are asked. The math portion that matters most for most applicants is split across Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), which tests arithmetic word problems, and Mathematics Knowledge (MK), which tests high school math principles.
Official ASVAB materials describe AR as the ability to solve arithmetic word problems and MK as knowledge of high school mathematics principles. The official score information also explains that AR and MK are two of the four subtests used to calculate the AFQT score, along with Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. Before Day 1: Take a Short Diagnostic
Do not start by reading a whole book from page 1. Start with a 30- to 45-minute diagnostic. Work 10 arithmetic word problems and 10 direct math-knowledge questions without a calculator. Sort every miss into one of four buckets:
- Arithmetic fluency: fractions, decimals, percents, ratios, or mental computation.
- Word-problem setup: choosing the correct operation, rate, proportion, or equation.
- Algebra and number properties: exponents, roots, factors, equations, or inequalities.
- Geometry and measurement: perimeter, area, volume, triangles, circles, or unit conversion.
Your biggest bucket becomes the first priority. A student who misses five word problems because the setup is unclear should not spend the whole first week memorizing formulas. A student who understands setups but makes calculation mistakes needs daily arithmetic work.

Week 1: Rebuild Number Sense
Week 1 is about speed and accuracy with no calculator. The ASVAB FAQ explains why calculator use is restricted: the test is measuring the ability to apply basic math and hand calculations. That means the first week should feel a little repetitive.
Review these topics in order: fraction operations, decimal operations, percent of a number, percent increase and decrease, ratios, proportions, and unit rates. Each day, do a small mixed set. For example:
- Compute 3/4 + 5/8.
- Convert 0.375 to a fraction.
- Find 18% of 250.
- A car travels 180 miles on 6 gallons. What is the miles-per-gallon rate?
- Write the ratio 24:36 in simplest form.
Answer key: 1. 11/8 or 1 3/8. 2. 3/8. 3. 45. 4. 30 miles per gallon. 5. 2:3.
Week 2: Arithmetic Reasoning
Arithmetic Reasoning is not just computation. It is reading, translating, and choosing a plan. For every AR problem, write one short line before solving: What is being asked? Then write the operation or relationship.
Use this four-step routine:
- Underline the actual question.
- List the useful numbers and ignore extra wording.
- Choose the structure: total, difference, product, rate, percent, ratio, or proportion.
- Estimate before calculating so a wild answer is easier to catch.
Sample AR problem: A supply truck carries 18 boxes. Each box contains 24 meal packets. If 72 packets are used, how many packets remain?
Solution: Total packets = 18 x 24 = 432. Remaining packets = 432 – 72 = 360.
Week 3: Mathematics Knowledge
Mathematics Knowledge questions are usually more direct. They may ask you to simplify an expression, solve an equation, identify a geometric fact, or evaluate a root or exponent. Build a short formula and fact sheet, but keep it practical. You do not need a giant reference packet. You need the formulas that actually unlock problems.
- Exponents: 2^5 = 32, 10^3 = 1000, and x^a x x^b = x^(a+b).
- Roots: sqrt(49) = 7, sqrt(81) = 9, and sqrt(100) = 10.
- Area: rectangle = lw, triangle = bh/2, circle = pi r^2.
- Pythagorean theorem: a^2 + b^2 = c^2 for right triangles only.
- Linear equations: isolate the variable by undoing operations in reverse order.
Sample MK problem: Solve 4x – 9 = 27.
Solution: Add 9 to both sides: 4x = 36. Divide by 4: x = 9.
Week 4: Timed Mixed Practice
The official CAT-ASVAB page lists 15 scored questions for AR and 15 scored questions for MK, with time limits that can vary when tryout questions are included. For home practice, use shorter timed sets so you build focus without burning out. Try 15 AR questions in one sitting and 15 MK questions in another sitting. Then spend at least as much time correcting as you spent testing.
Your correction notes should include three columns: missed problem, why I missed it, and what I will do next time. “Careless mistake” is not specific enough. Better notes sound like this: “I multiplied before converting minutes to hours” or “I used diameter as radius in the circle formula.”
Final 3 Days Before the Test
Do not cram brand-new topics in the final three days. Review the error log, redo missed questions, practice mental arithmetic, and sleep normally. If you still miss a topic repeatedly, choose a simple fallback strategy. For percent problems, convert to decimals. For rate problems, write distance = rate x time. For geometry, draw and label the figure before calculating.
