Ask for reasoning, not only answers. For a fraction problem, ask what the common denominator means. For a volume problem, ask what each dimension represents. For a decimal comparison, ask the student to rewrite both numbers with the same number of decimal places. These small explanations reveal whether the student understands the method or is only copying steps.
Use an error log with three columns: problem, mistake, fix. A useful mistake note might say “I compared 0.609 and 0.69 by counting digits instead of place value” or “I used area instead of volume.” The fix should be specific enough that the student can use it next time.
Common Grade 5 Trouble Spots
Fractions with unlike denominators: Students often add numerators and denominators separately. Use a visual model or common denominator to show why 1/2 + 1/3 is 5/6, not 2/5.
Decimal place value: Students may think 0.609 is larger than 0.69 because 609 is larger than 69. Rewrite 0.69 as 0.690 and compare thousandths.
Volume versus area: Area covers a flat surface; volume fills a three-dimensional box. If a problem gives length, width, and height, students should consider volume. If it gives only length and width, it may be area or perimeter.
