Grade 8 CMAS math preparation should feel like a bridge into Algebra 1. How to Study Functions

Students often think a function is only an equation. For Grade 8, practice functions in four forms: table, graph, equation, and situation. A strong student can move among all four.

Common Grade 8 Mistakes

  • Using x2 – x1 in the wrong order when finding slope.
  • Confusing y-intercept with slope.
  • Solving only one equation in a system and forgetting to find both coordinates.
  • Using diameter as radius in circle or cylinder problems.
  • Calling every relation a function without checking repeated inputs.
  • Describing scatter plots vaguely instead of naming positive, negative, strong, weak, or no association.

Two-Week CMAS Grade 8 Review Plan

Days 1-2: Review functions from tables, graphs, equations, and stories. Days 3-4: Practice slope, y-intercept, and linear equations. Days 5-6: Solve equations and systems. Days 7-8: Review Pythagorean theorem, volume, and transformations. Days 9-10: Practice scatter plots and mixed data questions. Days 11-14: Take mixed sets and correct every missed problem by topic.

Do not wait until the final week to mix topics. Grade 8 students need practice deciding whether a problem is asking for slope, a function value, a geometric formula, or an equation.

How Parents Can Check Grade 8 Work

Grade 8 math work can look correct even when the reasoning is weak, so ask students to explain the first step. For a function problem, they should identify input and output. For a linear equation, they should identify slope and starting value. For a geometry problem, they should say which formula applies and why. For a system, they should be able to explain what the ordered pair means in the situation.

If the explanation is unclear, the next practice should be slower and more visual. Draw the graph, label the triangle, or make a table. The purpose is not to make review longer; it is to make the student’s thinking visible enough to correct.

Quick Readiness Check

A student is ready for full mixed practice when they can solve one example from each major area on the same day: a function table, a two-step equation, a slope question, a Pythagorean theorem problem, and a data display question. If one area falls apart, return to that topic for two short sessions before another full practice test.
