Florida’s FAST (Florida Assessment of Student Thinking) Math assessment for Grade 3 is a computer-adaptive test built around the B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) standards. Unlike the older FSA, FAST is administered three times during the school year — in the fall, winter, and spring — giving students and teachers multiple checkpoints throughout the year rather than one high-stakes end-of-year event.
For Grade 3, FAST math covers five broad areas: number sense and operations (with a heavy focus on multiplication, division, and fractions), algebraic reasoning, measurement, geometric reasoning, and data analysis. This post gives you a 20-question practice test with full answer explanations and a 3-week study plan.

Grade 3 FAST Math: What B.E.S.T. Standards Are Tested
- Number Sense and Operations: Multiplication and division facts through 12 × 12, multi-digit addition and subtraction (up to 4 digits), rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, understanding fractions as parts of a whole, placing fractions on a number line, comparing fractions
- Algebraic Reasoning: Properties of multiplication (commutative, associative, distributive), number patterns, representing real-world situations with equations
- Measurement: Time and elapsed time, measuring length (U.S. customary and metric), liquid volume, mass, area using unit squares, perimeter
- Geometric Reasoning: Attributes of 2D shapes, categorizing quadrilaterals, partitioning shapes into equal parts
- Data Analysis and Probability: Reading scaled bar graphs, picture graphs, and frequency tables
FAST Grade 3 Math Practice Test (20 Questions)
1. What is 7 × 8?
Answer: 56
2. A baker made 48 muffins and put them equally into 6 boxes. How many muffins are in each box?
Answer: 48 ÷ 6 = 8 muffins per box
3. Round 347 to the nearest ten.
Answer: 350
4. Round 2,648 to the nearest hundred.
Answer: 2,600
5. What fraction of the shape is shaded if a rectangle is divided into 4 equal parts and 3 parts are shaded?
Answer: 3/4
6. Place these fractions in order from least to greatest: 2/6, 2/3, 2/8.
Answer: For fractions with the same numerator, the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction. Order: 2/8, 2/6, 2/3.
7. A garden has 5 rows of plants with 9 plants in each row. Write a multiplication equation and find the total number of plants.
Answer: 5 × 9 = 45 plants
8. What is the missing number? 8 × ___ = 72
Answer: 9
9. Use the distributive property to break apart 6 × 7.
Answer: 6 × 7 = 6 × (5 + 2) = (6 × 5) + (6 × 2) = 30 + 12 = 42
10. A movie starts at 1:15 PM and ends at 3:45 PM. How long is the movie?
Answer: 2 hours and 30 minutes
11. A table is 2 meters long. How many centimeters is that?
Answer: 200 centimeters
12. A rectangle has a length of 9 cm and a width of 5 cm. What is its area?
Answer: Area = 9 × 5 = 45 square cm
13. A square has a side length of 6 inches. What is its perimeter?
Answer: Perimeter = 4 × 6 = 24 inches
14. What is 3,472 + 1,859?
Answer: 5,331
15. What is 5,304 − 2,678?
Answer: 2,626
16. What shape has exactly 4 right angles and 4 equal sides?
Answer: A square
17. A quadrilateral has exactly one pair of parallel sides. What is it called?
Answer: A trapezoid
18. Students in a class picked their favorite color. 8 picked blue, 5 picked red, 3 picked green, and 4 picked yellow. How many more students picked blue than green?
Answer: 8 − 3 = 5 more students
19. Kezia has 4 bags. Each bag has 6 books. How many books does she have in all? Write a multiplication equation.
Answer: 4 × 6 = 24 books
20. A number pattern starts: 3, 6, 9, 12, … What are the next two numbers? What is the rule?
Answer: 15, 18. Rule: add 3 each time (or multiply the position number by 3).
3-Week FAST Grade 3 Math Prep Plan
Week 1: Multiplication, Division, and Number Patterns
Spend 15 minutes daily on multiplication facts (especially × 6, × 7, × 8, × 9, × 12). Work on 5 word problems each day that use multiplication or division in context. Review the three multiplication properties: commutative, associative, and distributive.
Week 2: Fractions and Measurement
Practice placing fractions on a number line (halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths). Practice comparing fractions with the same numerator or same denominator. Work on area and perimeter problems, unit conversions (feet/inches, meters/centimeters), and elapsed time on an analog clock.
Week 3: Review and Data Analysis
Practice reading and interpreting bar graphs and picture graphs with scaled keys (e.g., each picture = 5 items). Review rounding and multi-digit addition/subtraction. Take a full 20-question mixed practice test and go over every wrong answer.
