Grade 6 math is the bridge year between elementary arithmetic and middle school algebra. On the Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade (EOG) assessment, students are expected to reason about ratios and proportional relationships, write and evaluate algebraic expressions and equations, apply statistical measures, and extend their geometry and number sense to include negative numbers and the full coordinate plane. It is the most conceptually diverse grade in K–8 mathematics.
This guide covers each major domain on the Georgia Milestones Grade 6 EOG, includes original practice problems with complete answers, and provides a structured study plan.

Georgia Grade 6 Milestones Math: Domain Overview
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Students understand ratio concepts (part-to-part and part-to-whole), compute unit rates (including ratios of fractions), use ratio reasoning to solve percent problems, and use tape diagrams and ratio tables to solve problems. Percent of a quantity and finding the whole when a percent is given are core skills at this level.
The Number System
Students divide fractions by fractions using the standard algorithm (multiply by the reciprocal), fluently multiply and divide multi-digit numbers, add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals, and work with integers and rational numbers — including locating them on a number line and plotting them on a coordinate plane in all four quadrants.
Expressions and Equations
Students write, read, and evaluate algebraic expressions involving variables. They apply the properties of operations (commutative, associative, distributive) to generate equivalent expressions, solve one-step equations and inequalities, and represent solutions on a number line.
Geometry
Students find the area of triangles, special quadrilaterals, and composite figures by decomposing them into triangles and rectangles. They find the volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths, and they represent three-dimensional shapes with nets to find surface area.
Statistics and Probability
Students work with measures of center (mean, median, mode) and measures of variability (range, mean absolute deviation, interquartile range). They display data using dot plots, histograms, and box plots, and they use data summaries to describe the overall shape of a distribution.
Georgia Milestones Grade 6 Practice Problems
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
1. In a class of 30 students, 18 are girls. Write the ratio of girls to boys in simplest form.
Girls: 18, Boys: 12. Ratio = 18:12 = 3:2.
2. A car travels 210 miles in 3.5 hours. What is the unit rate in miles per hour?
210 ÷ 3.5 = 60 miles per hour.
3. A store sells 5 apples for $3.25. How much do 12 apples cost?
Unit price = $3.25 ÷ 5 = $0.65 per apple. 12 × $0.65 = $7.80.
4. 40% of 95 is what number?
0.40 × 95 = 38.
5. A jacket costs $56 after a 30% discount. What was the original price?
0.70 × original = $56 → original = $56 ÷ 0.70 = $80.
The Number System
6. Divide: 3/4 ÷ 2/5
3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8 = 1 7/8.
7. Order from least to greatest: −3, 1/2, −1.5, 0, 2.4
−3, −1.5, 0, 1/2, 2.4.
8. Plot these points on a coordinate plane: A(3, −2), B(−4, 1), C(−2, −5), D(5, 4). Which quadrant is each point in?
A: Quadrant IV (+ x, − y). B: Quadrant II (− x, + y). C: Quadrant III (− x, − y). D: Quadrant I (+ x, + y).
Expressions and Equations
9. Evaluate: 4x² − 3y when x = 3 and y = 5
4(9) − 3(5) = 36 − 15 = 21.
10. Use the distributive property to expand: 7(3a − 4b + 2)
21a − 28b + 14.
11. Solve: x/4 + 3 = 9
x/4 = 6 → x = 24.
12. Write and solve an inequality: “A number increased by 7 is at least 20.”
n + 7 ≥ 20 → n ≥ 13.
Geometry
13. Find the area of a triangle with base 14 cm and height 9 cm.
A = (1/2)(14)(9) = 63 cm².
14. Find the area of a trapezoid with parallel sides of 8 m and 12 m and a height of 6 m.
A = (1/2)(8 + 12)(6) = (1/2)(20)(6) = 60 m².
15. A rectangular prism has a base of 5 cm × 3 cm and a height of 2.5 cm. Find the volume.
V = 5 × 3 × 2.5 = 37.5 cm³.
Statistics and Probability
16. Data set: 12, 15, 11, 19, 13, 16, 11, 14. Find the mean, median, mode, and range.
Sorted: 11, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19. Mean = (11+11+12+13+14+15+16+19)/8 = 111/8 = 13.875. Median = (13+14)/2 = 13.5. Mode = 11. Range = 19 − 11 = 8.
17. A box plot has the following values: Min = 5, Q1 = 9, Median = 13, Q3 = 18, Max = 24. What is the IQR?
IQR = Q3 − Q1 = 18 − 9 = 9.
Common Georgia Grade 6 Milestones Mistakes
- Dividing fractions incorrectly: In 3/4 ÷ 2/5, students sometimes invert the wrong fraction. Always invert (flip) the divisor — the second fraction — and then multiply. 3/4 × 5/2, not 4/3 × 2/5.
- Substitution sign errors: When evaluating 4x² − 3y for negative values of x or y, students make sign errors. Writing out each substitution step with parentheses helps: 4(−3)² − 3(5).
- Mean vs. median confusion: In a data set with an outlier, mean and median can differ significantly. Students who confuse them in word problems lose points. Always calculate both when the problem doesn’t specify which measure to use.
- Coordinate plane quadrant errors: Students who can identify individual quadrant rules often make errors on the actual graph. Practice plotting points in all four quadrants with a labeled grid before the exam.
3-Week Georgia Grade 6 Milestones Prep Plan
Week 1: Ratios, Proportions, and the Number System
