Grade 7 math builds directly on the ratio and proportion foundation established in Grade 6, then extends it into percent problems, scale drawings, and real-world applications. At the same time, students deepen their work with rational numbers, begin solving multi-step equations and inequalities, and encounter geometric concepts like surface area and volume of complex figures. The NC EOG Grade 7 math assessment covers all of this — and word problems appear throughout every domain.
This guide covers the major content areas typically assessed on the NC EOG Grade 7 math test, with a focus on word problem types, practice problems with answers, and a structured review plan.

NC EOG Grade 7 Math: Major Content Domains
Ratios and Proportional Relationships
Proportional reasoning is the central theme of Grade 7. Students work with proportional relationships in multiple representations: tables, graphs, equations, and verbal descriptions. Key skills include:
- Identifying whether a relationship is proportional and explaining why (using tables, graphs, or the unit rate)
- Calculating unit rates with complex fractions (e.g., 1/2 mile per 1/4 hour = 2 miles per hour)
- Solving percent problems including:
- Percent increase and decrease
- Simple interest: I = Prt
- Discounts, markups, sales tax, and tips
- Scale drawings and scale factors
Practice (percent change): A shirt originally costs $45. After a 20% discount, what is the sale price? Discount = 20% × $45 = $9. Sale price = $45 − $9 = $36. (Answer: $36)
Practice (scale drawing): On a map, 1 cm = 25 km. Two cities are 7.2 cm apart on the map. What is the actual distance? 7.2 × 25 = 180 km. (Answer: 180 km)
Practice (simple interest): $500 is invested at 4% annual interest for 3 years. How much interest is earned? I = 500 × 0.04 × 3 = $60. (Answer: $60)
The Number System
Grade 7 extends arithmetic to all rational numbers — positive and negative fractions and decimals. Students must:
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers (including negative fractions and decimals)
- Apply the rules for operations with integers to rational number contexts
- Convert between fraction, decimal, and percent forms
- Solve real-world problems using rational number operations
Practice: Compute −3/4 − (−1/2). Rewrite: −3/4 + 1/2 = −3/4 + 2/4 = −1/4. (Answer: −1/4)
Practice: A submarine was at −120 feet. It descended an additional 35 feet. What is its new depth? −120 + (−35) = −155 feet. (Answer: −155 feet)
Expressions and Equations
Algebraic work in Grade 7 includes:
- Writing and simplifying linear expressions using properties (distributive, combining like terms)
- Solving multi-step linear equations in one variable, including equations with the variable on both sides
- Solving and graphing multi-step linear inequalities on a number line
Practice: Solve 3(x − 4) = 2x + 1. Distribute: 3x − 12 = 2x + 1. Subtract 2x: x − 12 = 1. Add 12: x = 13. (Answer: x = 13)
Practice: Solve and graph: 2x + 5 > 11. Subtract 5: 2x > 6. Divide: x > 3. Open circle at 3, arrow pointing right. (Answer: x > 3)
Geometry
Grade 7 geometry focuses on circles, composite figures, and three-dimensional shapes:
- Circumference and area of circles: C = 2πr, A = πr²
- Area of composite figures (shapes made of triangles, rectangles, and circles)
- Surface area and volume of prisms, pyramids, and composite 3D figures
- Angle relationships: supplementary, complementary, vertical, and angles formed by parallel lines cut by a transversal
- Understanding triangle inequality: the sum of any two sides must be greater than the third
Practice: A circle has a radius of 7 cm. What is its area? A = π × 7² = 49π ≈ 153.94 cm². (Answer: 49π cm² or ≈ 153.9 cm²)
Practice: Two angles are supplementary. One measures 67°. What is the other? 180° − 67° = 113°. (Answer: 113°)
Statistics and Probability
Grade 7 statistics introduces sampling and probability:
- Random sampling to make inferences about a population
- Comparing two populations using measures of center (mean, median) and variability (range, IQR, MAD)
- Experimental and theoretical probability: P(event) = number of favorable outcomes / total outcomes
- Compound probability: using tree diagrams, tables, and the multiplication rule for independent events
Practice: A bag has 4 red marbles and 6 blue marbles. What is the theoretical probability of drawing a red marble? P(red) = 4/10 = 2/5 = 40%. (Answer: 2/5 or 40%)
Word Problem Strategies for Grade 7
Grade 7 EOG word problems are multi-step, and rushing into calculations is the most common error. Before writing any arithmetic, try this 3-step process:
- Identify the question type. Is this a percent problem? A proportion? A geometry formula problem? An equation setup? Naming the type focuses the solution strategy.
- List given information. Write out numbers and units. Label each quantity so you don’t confuse them mid-problem.
- Set up the equation or proportion before computing. Students who jump to arithmetic without a setup frequently use the right numbers in the wrong operation.
Three-Week NC EOG Grade 7 Math Study Plan
Week 1: Proportional Reasoning and Rational Numbers
Focus entirely on percent problems (discount, markup, interest, percent change) and rational number operations with negatives. Practice at least 10 word problems per session. By end of week, students should solve a two-step percent problem without help.
Week 2: Equations, Geometry, and Statistics
Work through multi-step equations and inequalities in the first two sessions. Shift to circles (area and circumference) and angle relationships in sessions 3 and 4. End with probability and statistics — two-sample comparison problems and basic compound probability.
Week 3: Practice Tests and Mixed Review
Take one or two full practice tests. Review every missed item and trace errors back to specific skills. Revisit the two weakest areas before the test day. End the week with light review only — no new material in the final 48 hours before the exam.
